Blog: Mel's Muse - A Blog By Polly & Sean, Aged 4 years, 11 months, 2 weeks and 2 days

My daughter, a teacher, told me that children are now being encouraged to blog and would I please get her two to do so. Polly loves reading and writing; Sean loves typing on a keyboard. Here is the result of their first blog which tells the story of the play they put on for our benefit this afternoon. Apart from the title, and credits, this is entirely their own work.

Tday we mad a play ov a princes and a princ. The dragin loct the princes in the tow r. polly age 4 years 11 months 2 weeks and 2 days.

My srod is sharp.and shiny. I killed the dragin. Sean 4 11 months 2 weeks and 2 days. We are twins.

I recently attended an educational ICT conference and went along to a ‘Blogging in the Classroom’ seminar. I had not really thought about 'blogging with children' beforehand but came away with ideas of how to go about it: start by reading blogs with children about things of interest to them e.g. cats or lego; move on to commenting on the blogs they have read; and then finally begin, together and safely, to help them write their own blogs.

We were given an excellent website - 20 days to better blogging with children: http://literacyresourcesandideas.edublogs.org/20-days-to-better-blogging-with-children/ and told about a project run by the British Council (http://www.britishcouncil.org/etwinning-blogs-project-primary.doc) to encourage blogging by children in different countries entitled ‘The Schoolbag - what is in your schoolbag? blog about it!’

What a brilliant way to start – even with young children – and for them to learn about children in other countries. Can't wait to get back to school next term and try out 'blogging' with my 5 year olds.
