For those of you who may be coming to this Post for the first time, here is the competition I set at the beginning of September, asking you to list the Five Things I’d Like To Do Before I Die.

PETULANCE & PRESSURE

It was obviously something that you all find quite daunting, because it was only with a degree of petulance and pressure on my part, that you were eventually persuaded to put your thoughts together. In the meantime, in the interest of research, I came across the following website - Jim's take on a bucket list - and feel sure you will agree that, had he been a contender, he would certainly have deserved to be on my short list! Since then, I’ve discovered that Sam Jordison not only rubbished the entire concept of bucket lists with his book, Sod That! 103 Things Not to Do Before You Die, published this week by Orion, but then put his own recommendations into practice – and finally into perspective.

Be that as it may, you made your lists, and I made mine. My list was compiled over the month, as you can see, whilst most of yours were done in one fell swoop. And in the end, I had to come up with a shortlist.

STRAIGHT CARROTS & CONTENTMENT

It would appear, from your comments, that there have been those who’ve favoured the straight-carrot as a winner, and those who’ve preferred the more philosophical idea of learning to be content in all things. Me? I, of course, being sole judge and prize-giver, have the privileged position of having the last word. And since straight carrots are already grown (have a look in Sainsbury’s or Waitrose or wherever your preferred shopping experience happens to be) and learning to be content in all things is something we should all be not simply aspiring to, but would be well advised to do – in the light of today’s economic climate – I’m going for – DRUM ROLL; TRUMPET SOUND; CLENCHED FISTS; GRIM-FACED AND TEARFUL – why does coloured soap always lathers white? That really intrigues me.
